The Route

🏔️ Route Character

Hadrian's Wall Path follows the Roman frontier from the Solway Firth to the River Tyne — flat coastal walking, farmland, and then the world-class central crags where the wall is at its most dramatic. It's the easiest of the long-distance trails to navigate and one of the most rewarding.

The central section through the crags is outstanding: rolling ridges, forts, milecastles, and huge views across Northumberland.

🧰 Route Breakdown

  • Day 1 — Bowness-on-Solway → Carlisle — Flat coastal walking, estuary views and quiet farmland — a gentle introduction.

  • Day 4 — Once Brewed → Chollerford — Classic Hadrian's Wall scenery: Steel Rigg, Sycamore Gap, Crag Lough and Housesteads Fort.
  • Day 5 — Chollerford → Heddon-on-the-Wall — Rolling countryside, Roman forts and quiet lanes — gentle terrain.
  • Day 6 — Heddon-on-the-Wall → Wallsend — An urban transition, riverside paths, and a finish at Segedunum Roman Museum.
