On a separate trip, I came across two climbers getting ready to take on one of Snowdon’s steeper winter lines. It was one of those scenes where the mountain feels quiet, but the focus between the climbers is electric.

I watched them for a few minutes as they assessed the face, tracing their intended route with slow, deliberate movements. No rush, no bravado — just careful planning and quiet conversation. You could see them weighing the conditions, checking the snowpack, reading the terrain the way experienced climbers do.

Then came the shift. Helmets on. Harnesses tightened. Ropes organised. That calm, methodical transition from planning to action.

Once they were ready, they moved off with steady confidence, committing to the climb with purpose. It was a great reminder of how much happens before the first step upward — the preparation, the judgement, the respect for the mountain.

A small moment, but a powerful one to witness.

Most people pack their camera away the moment the rain starts. That’s a mistake. Rain, mist, and cloud add depth, mood, and atmosphere you’ll never get from a clear blue sky. Some of the strongest outdoor images are made in the very conditions most photographers avoid.
