How We Test Gear

Every piece of gear reviewed on Mark Xplore is tested in real conditions — the conditions it was designed for. Reviews are based on actual use over weeks and months, not first impressions. Ratings reflect performance, not manufacturer claims.

Testing Conditions

• Distance and hours logged during testing
• Terrain types and weather conditions encountered
• Load carried and specific use case
• Minimum 100km for footwear and apparel before publishing

Scoring Metrics

Each product is rated across five categories on a scale of 1-10:

• Comfort / Fit — Does it cause hotspots, chafing, or discomfort during extended use?
• Performance — How well does it perform its primary function?
• Durability — How does it hold up over time? Stitching, materials, construction.
• Weight / Packability — How easily does it carry when not in use?
• Value — Does it deliver at its price point?

The overall score is an average of all categories. Ratings reflect real performance over extended use in actual conditions.

Bias & Transparency

Sometimes brands send over kit for us to test — and sometimes it arrives for free. But the deal is always the same: the gear gets put through the exact same standards as everything else. No shortcuts. No soft reviews. No guaranteed praise. If it doesn't perform in real conditions, it doesn't get a positive write-up.
