🏔️ Route Character
The Roaches is a big landscape walk — dramatic gritstone edges, sweeping moorland, and sculpted rock towers that feel almost alpine in places. The climb from Roaches Gate is short and sharp, rising quickly onto the main ridge. Once you're up, the day becomes a long, flowing walk along the edge with huge views across Tittesworth Reservoir, the Staffordshire Moorlands, and the distant hills of Cheshire.
The highlight is the rock architecture: towering buttresses, narrow fins, sculpted tors, and atmospheric gullies. Add the optional detour to Lud's Church — a deep, moss-covered chasm hidden in the woods — and you get one of the most unique features in the Peak District.
This is a walk with personality: rugged, dramatic, and endlessly photogenic.

- 1. Roaches Gate → Upper Ridge — A short, steep pull onto the gritstone edge. Views open immediately.
- 2. Upper Ridge → Doxey Pool — Easy, flowing edge walking. Doxey Pool sits mysteriously on the ridge — small, atmospheric, and tied to local folklore.
- 3. Doxey Pool → Roaches High Point — The best panoramas of the day: Tittesworth Reservoir below, Staffordshire Moorlands stretching out beyond.
- 4. High Point → Forest Wood — A gentle descent into woodland. The terrain shifts from open moor to shaded forest.
- 5. Lud's Church (Optional) — A deep, mossy chasm carved into the hillside — cool, atmospheric, and unlike anything else in the Peak District.
- 6. Return via Lower Paths — Easy valley walking back toward Roaches Gate.
