Ben Nevis via the South Ridge

This quieter, scenic loop is the best non-scrambling alternative to the Tourist Path. It uses the same lower approach but breaks away early, climbing the broad South Ridge for a more peaceful, panoramic ascent. It's still a big, physical day — long, exposed, and serious in poor weather — but it avoids the crowds and gives a more natural mountain feel. If you want a straightforward ascent without the zigzag motorway, this is the line.

The Route

🏔️ Route Character

This route feels like a proper mountain journey — quieter, more scenic, and more varied than the Tourist Path. The day begins with the same gentle approach toward Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe, but instead of joining the zigzags, the route swings onto the broad South Ridge.

The ridge is long, steady, and atmospheric, giving huge views toward the Mamores and Glen Nevis. It's exposed in wind but never technical. Higher up, the terrain merges with the summit plateau, rising through rocky ground to the top of Ben Nevis.

The descent follows the Mountain Track, giving a simple, steady finish back to Glen Nevis.

  • 3. South Ridge Ascent — A long, steady climb with huge views. Exposed in wind but never technical.
