Whernside

Whernside is the highest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks — a long, sweeping ridge rising above the Ribblehead Viaduct with huge views across Dentdale, Kingsdale, the Howgills, and the full limestone country of the Dales. It's the easiest of the three peaks technically, but the longest in feel: a steady, structured ascent followed by a broad, panoramic ridge walk and a steep, rugged descent into Deepdale. The Ribblehead approach is the classic line — clean, scenic, and perfectly suited to both Three Peaks challengers and casual walkers.

The Route

🏔️ Route Character

Whernside is a ridge mountain — long, elegant, and panoramic. The ascent is steady and structured, the summit ridge is broad and airy, and the descent is steep and rugged. It's the least technical of the Three Peaks, but still a proper mountain day with big views and varied terrain.

The Ribblehead Viaduct gives the route a dramatic start — one of the most iconic structures in northern England.

🧰 Route Breakdown

  • 1. Ribblehead → Ribblehead Viaduct — Start at Ribblehead and follow the clear track toward the viaduct — huge arches rising above the moorland. One of the most photographed spots in the Dales.
  • 2. Viaduct → Blea Moor Aqueduct — Pass beneath the viaduct and follow the track as it curves gently right, rising gradually toward the aqueduct and the base of Whernside's long flank. Easy, scenic, and fast.
  • 3. Whernside Steps — The structured ascent — a rising path leads to the foot of the ridge, then the path steepens into long, well-built stone steps. Steady gradient, no scrambling, big positive footing, excellent flow. The steps ease as you reach the crest, where huge views open toward Dentdale and the Howgills.
  • 4. Whernside Summit Ridge — The best part of the mountain — a long, airy ridge with a broad grassy crest, gentle gradients, and big skies. Easy ridge walking with occasional rocky patches, rising steadily to the summit.
  • 5. Whernside Summit (736 m) — A stone shelter and trig point mark the top. The widest panorama of the Three Peaks — Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent, Dentdale, Kingsdale, the Howgills, and Morecambe Bay on clear days.
  • 6. Summit → Deepdale Descent — Steeper and more rugged than the ascent: a rocky path drops from the summit (uneven stone, occasional loose sections — care in wet conditions), then eases onto a long walled track, the classic Three Peaks descent, before curving through the quiet, scenic valley of Deepdale.
  • 7. Deepdale → Ribblehead — A gentle track leads back toward Ribblehead as the viaduct comes into view again, completing the loop.
