Tryfan Walk

Tryfan is the mountain that defines Welsh scrambling — a sharp, rocky fin rising above the Ogwen Valley with no easy way up and no moment where the hands don't get involved. It's raw, rugged, and unmistakable, a true Grade 1 classic that feels like a full adventure from the very first move. The North Ridge is the line everyone comes for: continuous scrambling, huge exposure, and a summit crowned by the famous Adam and Eve stones. If you want a mountain that feels alive under your hands, Tryfan is the one.

The full route breakdown — stats, the line in stages, what it really feels like, and the practical detail you need to plan the day.

The Route

🏔️ Route Character

Tryfan's North Ridge is pure scrambling — steep rock, hands-on moves, and constant decision-making. There's no single crux; instead, the entire ridge is a chain of short steps, slabs, chimneys, and rocky towers. The exposure builds gradually, the views open dramatically, and the sense of progression is perfect.

The ridge is never technical, but it is serious: route-finding matters, the terrain is steep and committing, and the scrambling is continuous.

The summit is one of the best in Snowdonia — a narrow rocky crown with Adam and Eve standing proud. Many people jump between them; many people don't. Either choice is respectable. This is one of the greatest mountain days in the UK.

🧰 Route Breakdown

  • 1. Ogwen Cottage → North Ridge Base — A short approach on rocky paths. The ridge rises sharply ahead.
  • 2. Lower North Ridge — Easy scrambling, big blocks, and the first hands-on moves. Route-finding begins immediately.
  • 3. Mid-Ridge Towers — Steeper, more dramatic terrain. Short chimneys, rocky steps, and spicy positions. The scrambling becomes continuous.
  • 4. The Cannon Stone — A famous leaning block on the ridge. A perfect photo spot and a natural progress marker.
  • 5. Upper Ridge → Summit Towers — The scrambling becomes more exposed. Multiple lines exist — all steep, all hands-on.
  • 6. Tryfan Summit (Adam & Eve) — A narrow rocky top with huge views across the Glyderau and the Ogwen Valley. The jump between Adam and Eve is optional.
  • 7. Descent via the South Ridge — Easier but still rocky. A steady descent toward Bwlch Tryfan and back to Ogwen.

🧰 GPX & Map Notes

On OS Explorer OL17. A GPX helps with the approach and descent, but not the ridge — scrambling lines vary and GPS is unreliable on steep rock.
