Tryfan + Bristly Ridge
This is the full Glyderau mountaineering day — a continuous, hands-on ridge linkup that climbs Tryfan via the North Ridge, crosses Bwlch Tryfan, and then tackles the legendary Bristly Ridge to reach the summit of Glyder Fach. It's steep, exposed, atmospheric, and unforgettable. Two Grade 1 scrambles back-to-back, huge rock architecture, and some of the best ridge positions in Snowdonia. If you want a proper mountaineering day without needing ropes, this is the route.

The Route
🏔️ Route Character
This is a big, committing mountain day — two scrambles, two summits, and a full traverse of the Glyderau's most dramatic terrain. The character shifts throughout: Tryfan North Ridge — continuous Grade 1 scrambling, steep rock, exposed towers; Bwlch Tryfan — a short breather between ridges; Bristly Ridge — steeper, narrower, more exposed, the crux of the day; Glyder Fach summit — shattered rock, huge views, and the famous Cantilever Stone.
The scrambling is never technical, but it is serious: route-finding matters, exposure is real, and the terrain is committing. This is one of the best mountaineering days in Wales.
🧰 Route Breakdown
- 1. Ogwen Cottage → Tryfan North Ridge Base — A short approach on rocky paths. The ridge rises sharply ahead.
- 2. Tryfan North Ridge — Continuous Grade 1 scrambling. Towers, chimneys, slabs, and spicy positions. The Cannon Stone marks the mid-point.
- 3. Tryfan Summit (Adam & Eve) — A narrow rocky crown with huge views. The jump is optional.
- 4. Descent to Bwlch Tryfan — Steep, rocky, and slow. The col sits between Tryfan and Glyder Fach.
- 5. Bristly Ridge Start — The scrambling begins immediately. Multiple lines exist — the safest is the Sinister Gully (left-hand gully).
- 6. Sinister Gully → Main Ridge — Steep, enclosed scrambling. Hands-on throughout. The ridge opens above.
- 7. Bristly Ridge Pinnacles — The most dramatic section — narrow pinnacles, exposed steps, and huge views. Grade 1–2 terrain.

🧰 GPX & Map Notes
On OS Explorer OL17. A GPX helps with the approach and descent, but not the ridge — scrambling lines vary and GPS is unreliable on steep rock.
