Route Character
The Watkin Path begins in the deep green of Nant Gwynant, climbing steeply through ancient woodland beside the Afon Cwm Llan. Cool, shaded, and immediately uphill — no gentle warm-up here.
Above the trees, the path breaks out onto open hillside and the remains of the old quarries. The south-east ridge rises ahead like a wall: steep, rocky, exposed to the weather, and carrying huge views across to Llyn Llydaw and the Horseshoe.
The biggest ascent, the wildest feel, the most sustained gradients. The descent is long and punishing on tired legs — you earn every metre of this day.

- 1. Nant Gwynant → Woodland Climb — A steep pull through ancient woodland, following the stream up the valley. Cool, shaded, immediately demanding.
- 2. The Quarries — The path emerges onto open hillside past the old quarry ruins. The views open wide and the south-east face dominates the skyline.
- 3. The South-East Ridge — Rough, steep, exposed. The defining section: big scenery, big gradients, proper mountain ground.
- 4. Bwlch Ciliau → Summit — A final climb to the col, then a stepped ascent to the summit ridge. An option to descend via Allt y Gribin for a quieter loop.
